COLLECTION HISTORY Collection commenced: 1997 Break in series: None Other details: COLLECTION METHODOLOGY BOCSAR's default counting unit for crime data is criminal incidents. Criminal incidents are activities detected by or reported to police which involve the same offender(s) and victim(s); occur at the one location during one uninterrupted period of time; and fall into one offence category and one incident type. BOCSAR also reports on victims who have come to the attention of the New South Wales (NSW) Police Force either because they reported a crime against them or the crime was otherwise detected, and on alleged offenders or 'Persons of Interest' who have had a legal action commenced against them by the NSW Police Force. The default counting unit for courts data is charges, persons charged or persons found guilty in finalised court appearances in NSW criminal courts. Courts data is sourced from the JusticeLink system which contains information on the offences, case outcomes and sentences associated with defendants dealt with by NSW criminal courts. SCOPE AND COVERAGE BOCSAR's crime data consist of criminal incidents reported to, or detected by, police and recorded on the NSW Police Force's Computerised Operational Policing System (COPS). 'Domestic violence related' data is available for selected offences against the person including assault, murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, murder accessory/conspiracy, sexual offences, harassment/threatening behaviour, abduction/kidnapping and malicious damage to property. The scope of courts data includes defendants dealt with by NSW Higher, Local, and Children’s Courts. Offence data is based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Offence Classification (cat. no. 1234.0). DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Offences which the NSW Police Force have flagged as 'domestic violence related'. DEFINITION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE Sexual assault includes the police incident categories of sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault and assault with intent to have sexual intercourse. Indecent assault, act of indecency and other sexual offences includes more than ten police incident categories some of which are acts of indecency, aggravated acts of indecency, incest, carnal knowledge, wilful and obscene exposure, peep or pry, bestiality, and grooming/procuring.
